Fall 2010 collection from Bibhu Mohapatra in Vogue China

Mendel(这位设计师以前的雇主)的影子。另外还有一件立裁而成的丝绸晚礼服,有一半边是漂浮在模特身上的,效果非常独特。这一季Mohapatra试图展示一个更为完整的主题。这种策略在即将到来的销售旺季是很有帮助的。

"I wanted to do a collection that was opulent, definitely, but [in an] absolute, precise fashion," Bibhu Mohapatra said at his presentation. By precise, he meant wearable; in adding more coats — this time rendered in luscious raccoon and fox furs — and day dresses for fall, Mohapatra conjured a sleek tableau of sophisticated yet unfussy clothes. Sparked by the films “The Conformist” (“Il Conformista”) and “Metropolis,” the lineup was split between geometric-tinged eveningwear, like a terrific plunging green gown with gold piping at the waist, and more relaxed fare (several wool pencil skirts, for instance, looked efficient and graceful). Yet while Mohapatra’s coats, like a surprisingly understated fox-hooded canvas parka, marked new territory, his formal dresses remained the stars. In dusty rose and a clear, deep blue, expect to see his delicately pleated floor-skimmers on the social circuit come September.

Dossier Journal on Bibhu

Bibhu Mohapatra was having a Mussolini moment. Haunted music piped through a gallery where models, pale-faced and red-lipped, presided like glamorous ghosts from 1930s Europe. A chocolate leather harness fastened across a masculine loden green shirt; silver fox fur lined the hood of a coated canvas parka. The gowns—shimmering, structured bodices that emerged from columns of cascading chiffon––evoked Art Deco architecture, and the print on a long-sleeved dress resembled Futurist facets of a gleaming cube. It’s clear that Mohapatra, former design director at J. Mendel, is a master of the art and science of fashion, but this season—his strongest yet—was all about control.

Bibhu Mohapatra named CFDA Designer-WWD

WWD
NEW YORK — The Council of Fashion Designers of America and New York City Economic Development Corporation have tapped 12 designers as the first tenants of the CFDA Fashion Incubator.
“The CFDA Fashion Incubator is a natural extension of what our organization already does to support emerging design talent,” said Lisa Smilor, CFDA associate executive director. “We are thrilled to welcome this illustrious group of designers into the program, and are most appreciative for the support and involvement of our esteemed industry colleagues.”

The inaugural batch of designers are Alice Ritter, Bibhu Mohapatra, Prabal Gurung, Sophie Theallet, Rachel Dooley with Gemma Redux, Grant Krajecki of Grey Ant, Waris Ahluwalia of House of Waris, Joel Diaz with Jolibe, Alison Lewis with the Lewis label, Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne of Public School, Yuvi Alpert and Danna Kobo of Ruby Kobo and Justin Giunta of Subversive Jewelry.

To win individual design studio space at 209 West 38th Street, the designers needed to submit a business plan, show they had garnered “substantive editorial coverage” as well as orders from high-level retailers, have been in business for more than a year and a half and have a staff working for them. The designers received two-year leases on spaces that range from 800 to 1,000 square feet for below market rates of be- tween $1,500 and $2,000 per month.

The CFDA Fashion Incubator program was announced last fall with Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The NYCEDC is also of- fering the CFDA a $200,000 grant over three years to help es- tablish the program.

FROM ANGELINA TO THE UPPER WEST SIDE, BIBHU MOHAPTRA FINDS HIS DREAM

He left the glitz and glamour of working for one of the most sought out fashion labels in New York to put his own name on the back stitching of a gown. Since 2008, Bibhu has been designing under his namesake from a small Upper West Side studio. He's put out two ready-to-wear collections, with the most recent being S/S 10 which explores the theme of inner beauty. I'm loving the white jumper and the bone leather jacket for Spring which I might cop when I see him next month in New York. I'm hoping he gives me the you're Indian, I'm Indian discount!
