Fashion's Rising Star, Bibhu Mohapatra

Fashion's Rising Star, Bibhu Mohapatra

It takes gumption to launch a luxury fashion line in the midst of a global recession. Clearly, Bibhu Mohapatra – who at the age of 24 moved from his native Orissa to Utah for an MA in economics; then upped and moved to New York to pursue a career in fashion; and last year launched his eponymous line in said recession – has plenty of gumption.

Fortunately, he also has plenty of talent. An online stroll through hisFall 2010 collection is an exercise in lust control. These are sumptuous clothes, artfully constructed creations of the most gorgeous textures and materials. Eight years at luxury house J. Mendel helped give him the chops, but there’s more to it than that. Mohapatra looks to every corner of the cultural and intellectual universe for inspiration: the armor of 16th century Japanese warriors, the paintings of German abstract artist Hans Hartung, even his own X-rays. “I keep my eyes open all the time,” he explains. “The most beautiful things come from not so beautiful things.”
Add to the mix his innate Indian sensibility, and the package is complete. “I come from a heritage that’s so rich. It’s a constant feed that I have, and without it I don’t think my approach to design would be the same.” Indeed, he says, he makes an effort to rein in that influence. For him, it’s not about making a Western version of a sari, but about discovering new things – like the hand-woven peacock feathers, once worn by Indian royalty, that he stumbled upon on a trip to India and used in his debut collection. “When the light hits it, it becomes magical,” he says.
So it’s no wonder that Mohapatra’s star is rising. Three seasons in, his clothes are  sold in more than a dozen high-end stores around the world, and regularly featured in the pages of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and WWD. In February, he became one of 12 emerging designers chosen to participate in the CFDA Fashion Incubator program, entailing, among other things, subsidized studio space in New York’s Garment Center. “It’s like moving from a tiny apartment to a penthouse suite,” Mohapatra says of his new digs.
Of course it doesn’t hurt that in a random drawing among the 12 recipients he scored the biggest studio. When you’re hot, it seems, you’re hot.

For his first resort collection, Bibhu Mohapatra was inspired by vintage Fifties postcards from the South of France. “Postcards tell someone’s story. It’s a glimpse of a moment of happiness in someone’s life,” he said. And what a good life it proved to be for the Bibhu girl. Mohapatra focused on more day looks than in past seasons, with dresses in pretty brush stokes, embellished twinsets, slim trousers and a chic trenchcoat. There were still plenty of beautiful cocktail dresses and gowns; a cocktail frock in lace crochet over layers of yellow chiffon was especially noteworthy.

The inspiration: To me style has everything to do with ones inner quality. It is essential to locate those key qualities to establish ones own very individual style. Clothes on their own don't define style on their own.

Bloomberg: Scene Last Night: Fashion Prince Bibhu Mohapatra's Goat Hair

By Amanda Gordon - Feb 16, 2011 12:57 PM ET

High above Manhattan, Bibhu Mohapatra celebrated his Fashion Week outing with cocktails last night on the 46th floor of the Trump SoHo.
Floor-to-ceiling windows offered stunning pictures of the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges and beyond.
The skyline provided backdrops for guests such as fellow designer Prabal Gurung and model Anjhula Singh Bais, a blogger for Vogue India.
It was a tranquil scene compared with Fashion Week’s Lincoln Center base, where temporary tents were sandwiched between the David H. Koch Theater and the Metropolitan Opera House.
Earlier, the designer’s 33 models sported crow’s feathers at their neck or long gowns in blue and plum. For the woman who needs to be noticed, there was a bolero in long goat hair.

“The collection is about the conflict of extreme opposites that we carry in our minds: good versus evil, darkness versus light,” Mohapatra said.

Bibhu Mohapatra RTW Fall 2011

Posted TUESDAY FEBRUARY 15, 2011

From WWD.COM

“A collection of complementary extremes,” is how Bibhu Mohapatra described his fall lineup. He drew on Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” and “the journey of self, darkness and light, and black magic” it entailed. That’s a lot to express through eveningwear. In fact, the only thing Mohapatra’s collection seemed to have in common, at least superficially, with Salem society of yore was a flair for the dramatic. The gowns and cocktail dresses were darkly seductive and extremely sophisticated, a sensibility heightened by inky feathered gloves. These were not simple clothes. They were done in deep jewel tones and decorated with structural folds and asymmetric cuts. One ultrasexy, slinky black gown was spliced high around the neck with a single long sleeve, slit under the arm, done in shiny black sequins. Daywear was as dressed up as it gets with modern takes on luxe furs and worn over draped trousers and thick, pleated skirts. Mohapatra said his sales have been steadily doubling every season, and it’s easy to see why stores such as Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus and Hirshleifer’s find his clothes distinctive.
