FROM ANGELINA TO THE UPPER WEST SIDE, BIBHU MOHAPTRA FINDS HIS DREAM
He left the glitz and glamour of working for one of the most sought out fashion labels in New York to put his own name on the back stitching of a gown. Since 2008, Bibhu has been designing under his namesake from a small Upper West Side studio. He's put out two ready-to-wear collections, with the most recent being S/S 10 which explores the theme of inner beauty. I'm loving the white jumper and the bone leather jacket for Spring which I might cop when I see him next month in New York. I'm hoping he gives me the you're Indian, I'm Indian discount!

"Kicking off his second season, Bibhu Mohapatra steered away from strictly eveningwear toward what he called “softer, more wearable” clothes, proving he is not simply a gown guy. To wit, a black jersey dress with silver satin bands draped around the torso had an easy day-to-night look, and a cream trench, with short sleeves and cuffs in a blue-and-black print resembling X-ray film, was both practical and unconventional. Blouses — in jersey, linen and layers of organza — were just as versatile, many in that same pattern, which Mohapatra said was inspired by the X-rays from a recent physical that were lying around his studio. Inventive, very, and yet the lovely sportswear was still overshadowed by Mohapatra’s stunning cocktail dresses, from a butter yellow charmeuse and white lace number to a pale green one featuring layered embroidered squares that looked to be falling from the waist. Beautifully constructed and, yes, entirely wearable, the tight 24-look lineup left one wanting more."-WWD

Report from Abu Dhabi

"Bibhu Mohapatra, an Indian designer, meticulously constructed a series of square panels of colour on a silk dress, an organza layer over an abstract printed top, and a white and yellow gown that had several textures created with layers, panels and ruching of silk. Mohapatra’s unexpected mix of textures and experimentation drew applause"

A Model discovery
Bibhu Mohapatra Intern, Sophie Becker, was standing around waiting to do some thing, when a model did not show up for a shoot with fashion photographer Kevin Sturman.
Bibhu sent Sophie up to hair and make up with Alexa Rodolfo and then threw one of the Spring 2010 Looks on her and in the words of Bibhu, "She was spectacular"

Bibhu Mohapatra Spring 2010 Presentation

We are all very excited about the

to be Presented on
Monday, September 14th, 5 to 7
Bouwerie Lane Theatre Building, The Bowery, New York City
The collection is beautiful, hip, elegant, bright, and pure Bibhu Mohapatra
The collection is based on the unique inspiration of a medical xray Bibhu came across at home.
He was required by INS to have the xray made to screen for TB when he emigrated to this country from India.
The beauty of the xray and the structure captured his attention,
For this collection, Bibhu designed a very special printed fabric based on this type of imaging.
Bibhu is very lucky to have his same amazing close knit team, who has helped him pull it all together for a second time.
He would like to thank, ahead of the event, the following people.
His design assistant- the simply amazing and beautiful, Jennifer Manko
Hair and Makeup - the latina honey, Alexa Rodulfo
Photography -The sweet, flexible & very talented, Kevin Sturman
Styling- My stylish and very hard working hero, Lauren Santo Domingo
Space- The former Donald Judd studio
Located, designed, staged by Steven Harris of Steven Harris Architects & David Kelly of Rees Roberts Partners
Public & Press Relations, the amazing beautiful lady from the south, Laura Henson from Laura Henson Consultants
Sales- the super hip and very focused, Aida Khoursheed from Estarise
Bibhu is very fortunate to have a fluid team of amazing hard working talented interns, who he considers his family.
Bibhu also has a team of shadow help, suppliers and support, and clients, who prefer not to be mentioned, but who he deeply thanks for all their help and support, ahead of this event..

IN THIS MOST INAUSPICIOUS OF ECONOMIC MOMENTS, IT TAKES MAJOR GUTS TO LAUNCH A FASHION COLLECTION.
MEET A CROP OF FRESHMAN HOPEFULS WHO HAVE THE CREATIVE CHOPS—AND BUSINESS SAVVY—TO PULL IT OFF.

"BIBHU MOHAPATRA Probably more than most aspiring designers, Bibhu Mohapatra knows what he’s getting into. Prior to launching his own collection, he spent nine years at J. Mendel, eventually rising to design director. He also worked at Halston while a student at the Fashion Institute of Technology and has followed that house’s struggle to reclaim its identity and clout.
Mohapatra comes across as a deep-thoughts kind of guy. “Women are best,” he says, “in looks that bring out both their natural beauty and inner self.” And if his fall inspirations sound imposing—Frank Gehry and 18th-century Japanese warriors—he translated them into dressed-up clothes that are lavishly embellished yet manageable, stylewise, albeit with tony price tags (up to $17,000 for a mink coat). For fall, his first season, he picked up only two retail accounts, Dighton Rhode in Greenwich, Connecticut, and Adresse in Philadelphia. “Everyone is excited, but they don’t have the budgets,” Mohapatra says, noting that “some major target venues came and saw it more than twice. One has to do the groundwork. I’m paying my dues. It’s been superexciting, but it’s a little tough.”"

Who is Bibhu Mohapatra?
If you don't know who Bibhu Mohapatra is, now you will. During Mercedes Benz fashion week, Bibhu Mohapatra launched his label in February of this year. Former design director for J. Mendel, this new designer has already made everyone's heads turn. He's designed for many hollywood stars and his clothes are youthful, glamorous, sexy and feminine. His craftsmanship and finery represents a woman who is strong, confident and has a purpose. His clothes bring out the complete woman in all of us. In a word: Amazing.

Thank you
A quick note of Gratitude.
I would like to thank all the many people who have been so supportive of my work these last years.
I especially would like to thank the folks below who made it possible to create
and present the debut fall 2009 Bibhu Mohapatra Capsule Collection this last February.
Without these people, it would never have happened..
Jennifer Manko, my right and left hand, who gives up nights and weekends for my projects way too often..she is why it works.
Lauren Santo Domingo, who helped me see that I could in fact do this many years ago and helped us figure out the styling of the this show.
Alexa Rodulfo, who donated an entire day to the amazing Hair and Makeup
David Kelly, who designed and organizied the sets and the concept for the presentation
Isabelle Lirakis, who created the finishing touch to the designs, the hats!
Gabriel Levy, who spent hours putting together the sounds for the event
Laura Henson, who seems to know every editor in town for some rocking PR
Aslaug Magnusdottir, has all the marketing angles...and has been very supportive always
Peter Arnold, whose even handed guidance I could not do without, in all things fashion
Bobby Beard, who knows how to push, in the nicest way...
Jaime Gubbins, who helped pull it together from his many corners of the world
Steven Harris, has the eye and mind of a master
Lucian Rees Roberts, quiet charm, enthusiasm, and always ready to help
Additionally these kind folks below made it happen for various reasons:

I was blessed with the most amazing studio and workroom team.
They understood exactly what I was trying to do with this collection.
I am especially flattered they wanted to follow me from my last job.
I wish I could have them with me all the time::
Mr. T, Elisa Whang, Maria Robla, Rebeca Mendoza, Tara Allport, James, Vaughn, Shufan, Le, Jose, Inge, Jane, Narciza, Grace, Irina, Fong, Ching Chin, Laura, and Regine.
In addition, and most importantly, I would like to thank all of my various private clients, who continue to put so much trust in my work, and are happy to collaborate with me on their special gowns, coats, and suits. In fact you are the main ongoing source of support for this project. Your projects feed my soul.
I would also like to say "thank you" to the many and various editors, writers, bloggers who have shown so much support and enthusiasm for this collection. You make this industry function.
Lastly, I want to thank all the wonderful buyers, from all over the world, who came to the presentation or to the "out of the way" up town studio at 73rd street, to see the clothes, knowing full well that they had no budget to buy this season. But they made the effort any way. Your enthusiasm and excitement made it all worth while. And hopefully the budgets will improve by the time the Bibhu Mohapatra Spring 2010 Collection is presented In September 2009.
It is an amazing thing to see one's dreams come to life.
Thank you all
